Sun Valley Aspen
10-01-04
For me the fall means going into the Cascade Mountains
of Washington to see the brilliant red, orange, and yellow leaves. It also
means hiking up to see the golden larch when they are at their peak. This
year I was able to add a visit to see the spectacular yellow aspen of the
Idaho mountains. The Big Wood River valley north of Ketchum and Sun Valley
was fantastic. We drove up to Galena Summit at 8710' passing many groves
of aspen along the way. On the return trip we stopped several times to take
in and photograph the beauty of the trees. My timing could not have been much
better. In many areas the aspen were just about peaking. There was still a
little green but most were bright yellow. Some were already taking on an orange
hue.
I already know that I will have to make a return visit in the fall to
spend more time photographing these brilliant colored trees. The high mountain
colors of the Washington Cascades are tremendous. Adding a visit to aspen
country simply improved an already fantastic season of mountain colors.
