Broken Glass, Twisted Metal, And Pretty
Flowers - The Arboretum!
4-16-08
Kim called late in the afternoon suggesting an in
city walk. Instead of the usual Discovery Park she suggested the Arboretum.
I picked her up and we headed to the Museum of History & Industry parking
lot. The route begins with the trail to Foster Island. The lake level is
very high coming right up to the edge of the trail. It is pretty muddy in
spots. Buds are just opening along the trail. We went slowly and took a number
of photos. From Foster Island we headed over to the Arboretum. Many more
signs of spring over there.
Cherry and magnolia trees are in bloom. Azalea Way is mud free. Seems
like there is always mud there but not now. We wandered around taking more
photos. Then we heard a siren. Then another and another and another. Lake
Washington Boulevard was in sight and we saw more and more police cars and
ambulances. Uh oh, this did not look good. Crazy holed up in a house with
an arsenal of guns? Crazy on the loose after a shoot out? Hmm.... What the
heck was going on.
Next came a helicopter. Then another. Then still another. They were hovering
right over us. What in the world was going on. We kept taking photos and
speculating on just what was happening. We started back and I decided to
head down to the road and find out. Down on the boulevard I met a fireman
who said a bus was stuck under the overpass.
Well we were not far away so we headed on over. The overpass was full
of people. From the middle I looked over and low and behold there was what
was left a big tour bus. He made it more than 3/4 of the way under before
becoming wedged in tight. Glass was all around the bus and the roof was
several feet lower than normal. We stuck around taking photos and talking
with others until the tow truck was hooked up and the bus motor was started.
Between the bus engine and the tow truck they took it back out the way it
came in.
By now it was 7:45. Heck, I was out hiking without my 10 essentials.
No headlamp. With the bus now out from the overpass we decided it was time
to head for home. It was kind of neat on the trail from Foster Island as
dusk set in. Now I know where all the crows go at night. They were in all
the trees and lining the hand railing on the floating part of the trail. Kind
of like "The Birds". Black crows everywhere you looked. Loud screaming crows.
We made it back just before dark.
Not my usual walk through the Arboretum. The flowers were pretty good.
Only a few rhododendrons in bloom so far. Lots of cherry trees. We
didn't expect the Spansh Inq... I mean we didn't expect all the excitement.
All in all, it was a nice afternoon walk.
