With
a long drive ahead of us we
were up at 7:00 am and on the trail by 8:25 am. With my camera battery
on it's last legs and Gwen's finished we spent a lot less time on
photos. There is only about 400' of uphill on the way back to Iron
Gate. The sky was mostly cloudy at first but it never did rain. The one
bar on my battery indicator stayed there the whole way back. I managed
quite a few photos after all. If not this would be a pretty dull page.
The flowers were just as good. The lighting was much different than our
late afternoon hike in. Some sunshine and some clouds added to the
look. The two big meadows caused most of our delays. Well worth it.
We passed one other group on the way out. That was it. Steve was
staying one more night. I have a feeling this will not be my last visit
to Horseshoe Basin. I might try some time other than the Fourth of July
weekend though. We were back at the trailhead by 11:00 am. Less than
three hours out from Louden Lake. There were only five or six cars left
in the lot. I realize that it is a long drive for this hike but I can't
believe that on a potential four day weekend less than a dozen groups
headed up there. So much the better for us.
The drive home was long but not too bad. It was 64 degrees at the
trailhead and 89 down in Omak. We nicely missed all the heat. Rather
than chance a holiday backup on Highway 2 we took the slightly longer
drove over the North Cascades Highway. We were hit by a huge squall
west of Mazama that jumped a lot of rain. After that it was dry all the
way home. Thanks to Gwen for doing all the driving for Gwen and Janet
inviting me along. I had a great time.
